Connecting Generations, Inspiring Young Minds
At Catholic Social Services, we believe every generation has something valuable to offer. Our Foster Grandparent Program connects older adults with children in local elementary schools and Head Start programs, creating meaningful relationships that support student success while helping seniors stay active, engaged, and connected to their communities.
Through this program, eligible low-income seniors have the opportunity to earn a stipend while mentoring and tutoring children who benefit from additional academic and emotional support.
Making a Difference for Children and Seniors
The Foster Grandparent Program brings generations together through a shared commitment to learning, encouragement, and community connection.
For Children: Foster Grandparents provide individualized academic assistance, positive mentorship, and encouragement to help students build confidence, strengthen essential skills, and succeed in school.
For Seniors: The program offers an opportunity to supplement their income through a stipend, build meaningful relationships, reduce social isolation, and experience the fulfillment of making a difference in a child’s life.
How Foster Grandparents Support Students
Working alongside teachers and school staff, Foster Grandparents provide valuable classroom support and one-on-one attention to students who need additional guidance.
Our Foster Grandparents:
- Provide mentorship and encouragement to help children develop confidence and positive relationships.
- Support literacy and math skills through individualized tutoring and academic assistance.
- Promote social and emotional development by serving as positive role models for students facing challenges.
- Encourage independence in young learners by helping preschool children develop everyday skills and healthy habits.
While some students receive individualized tutoring based on recommendations from their teachers or schools, all students benefit from the encouragement, experience, and positive presence of Foster Grandparents in the classroom.
How the Foster Grandparent Program Works
Foster Grandparents visit participating elementary schools and Head Start programs weekly throughout the school year. Opportunities may also be available during summer programs based on school needs.
Each Foster Grandparent may be assigned up to five students for individualized mentoring and tutoring sessions, allowing them to provide consistent support while building meaningful connections.
By sharing their time, knowledge, and compassion, Foster Grandparents help children develop the skills and confidence they need to thrive, both inside and outside the classroom.
